Maine Foliage Report

AUGUSTA, Maine – The Maine Department of Conservation's (DOC) second fall foliage report shows increased color throughout the northern portion of the state.

Forest rangers in Aroostook County and the northern portions of Piscataquis and Somerset County (Zones 6 and 7) are reporting moderate leaf color, from 30 to 50 percent toward peak, along with low leaf drop of less than 30 percent.

Moderate color has also reached the tracking region that stretches from Bangor to Millinocket and east to Grand Lake (Upper Zone 4) on the New Brunswick, Canada border. This region also has low leaf drop, according to rangers.

The tracking regions covering Moosehead Lake, Rangeley, Bethel, Fryeburg, Kennebec County, southern Piscataquis and Penobscot County and northern Washington County (Zones 5, southern 4 and 3) now have low leaf color, from 10 to 30 percent toward peak, along with very low leaf drop of less than 10 percent.

Color in far southern Maine and along the coast is very low, or less than 10 percent toward peak, with very low leaf drop.

This weekend’s featured fall foliage hike led by a DOC park manager and district forester will take place on the Deboullie Public Reserved Lands unit in Aroostook County (zone 6) on Saturday, September 25, 2010.  “This hike will be especially beautiful, as we are nearing peak conditions in northern Maine,” according to Gale Ross, foliage spokeswomen for the department.
